Helping Your Child to Reach Their Goals

This time of the school year is the perfect time for parents to check in with their children to make sure they’re on track to reach their goals. If you are about to have this conversation with your student, below is an article from The Tutoring Center, Garland TX to help you make the time productive.

Find out Their Goals and Status

If you are in the same position as most parents then it’s likely that your child hasn’t shared their goals with you. However, this doesn’t mean that they haven’t set any. Make the time to sit down and ask about the goals they have set for themselves or with their teacher and how they are progressing towards them. It’s crucial that your child feels comfortable during this time to tell you if they aren’t on track to achieve any of their goals. If this is the case, below are two ways to respond:
  • Start by offering to help them make up for any lost time. For example, more homework help during their study sessions or helping them to find extra time in the schedule could be all it takes to get them back on track.
  • If it’s just not realistic for them to achieve all of their goals by the end of the school year, instead of them giving up entirely, adjust their goals. For example, if they aren’t likely to read the number of books they wanted to, reduce it.
While it isn’t ideal that you reduce their goals, if there is just no way that they can achieve their full goal then it’s better that they reduce it and use their time to achieve a smaller goal than simply giving up.

More Goals!

If your child, on the other hand, can’t see any problems with reaching all of their goals by the end of the school year and believes that they actually have additional time, don't be afraid to use this time to complete complementary goals. As an example, if your child will finish reading a series of books, look for smaller connected books by the same author. Often, books written in a series will have a range of smaller stories which further explain a particular event or character from the main series. This can be a great way to squeeze as much learning and goal-reaching into the time left.
