Mix the Sunshine and Writing

Summer is the perfect time for students to get out and enjoy the summer sun! The sun-filled period is also a great opportunity to further their learning and prepare them for the year ahead. But who said that they can’t do both at the same time? Below is a great article from The Tutoring Center, Garland TX about the very subject.

Writing Picnic

The first place to start is the kitchen where you can prepare everything that you will need for a great picnic at your local park. When you are packing, be sure to include a few pads of paper and a few pens or pencils. Once you are at the park and have finished playing on the equipment, sit down and do a bit of writing. However, instead of giving them a topic, allow them to write about anything at all which comes to their mind. It could be a diary entry of the day’s events or a completely factious story they have created. If you want to get even more involved, have them write the first paragraph, then you write the second, and so on, until you have a ridiculous story which doesn’t make sense and just makes you laugh! Not only is this a great activity to create a positive and enjoyable connection between your student and writing, it also affords you a great opportunity to identify any learning challenges they are experiencing, such as spelling issues or sentence structure.
